Ultimate Guide: How to wear a mask in the COVID pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has placed the entire world in a critical situation. However, the simplest solution we have is to wear a mask snug over the nose, mouth, or chin without any gaps in them to reduce the spread of the virus. Therefore, it is essential for you to understand the way to wear the mask properly. Here are some key things to consider when you wear a mask to protect yourself and others around you.

The proper way of wearing a mask

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has recently added to the precautions for COVID-19 stating that one should always wear the two cotton cloth marks together or with a surgical mask layered with another mask over it. This is termed as double masking, which is an additional safety precaution. People with allergies due to synthetic clothes, can opt for wearing the two cotton cloth masks together.  Here are some tips to keep in mind.

  • Ensure that the mask fits snugly against your face. Any gaps around the edges of the mask can let droplets with contaminants, pathogens, and particles leak in. Ensure that your mask is not too tight as it can cause a rash or suffocation. See to that it is not too loose by checking that no air flows through the mask below your eyes or on the sides of the mask.

·         Use a mask with two layers to prevent the spread of the virus in or out of your mask. A mask with layers will prevent more droplets from entering your mask or escaping from your mask if you are infected.

·         If you are wearing a reusable or washable mask, make sure you wash it properly with soap right after use. Note that every family member should have a separate mask, which shouldn't be exchanged at all for utmost safety.

·         Whenever you're wearing a face mask, pay attention so that it does not slip. Make sure not to wear the face mask under the nose or mouth. Ensure that the strap does not hang down or cross. If you have a beard, ensure that you trim it before wearing a mask.

·         Do not wear the face mask on your head. Also, do not wear the face mask around the neck or your arm. Whenever you remove the face mask, touch only the straps.

·         Do not touch the face mask without cleaning or sanitizing your hands before and after. Right after removing the face mask, clean your hands with 70% alcohol-based hand sanitizer or wash them using soap and water.

·         Avoid double masking with two disposable masks as they are not designed to fit tightly and wearing two may not improve their fit. If you use N95 masks, make sure you use only one and avoid double masking.

·         Discard disposable masks by placing them in a plastic bag and throwing it away with your garbage.

·         When it comes to face masks with valves, a significant portion of the exhaled air can be unfiltered and has the chance of affecting others if you are sick. These masks better used for protection against pollution.
